Norfolk Liberal Democrats are calling for Norfolk County Council to urgently set up a Cost of Living Summit.
A Cost of Living Summit would allow the council to bring together residents, public and voluntary sector organisations, Citizens Advice, foodbanks, local trades unions, Chambers of Commerce and organisations working to support residents to discuss practical ways to support people who will be most in need during this winter.
A national survey commissioned by the Liberal Democrats found that of more than 2,000 UK adults, 23% would do without heating over the winter months. That figure was even higher for parents with children under the age of 18, with 27% saying they would be forced to leave the radiators cold.
Liberal Democrat Brian Watkins said “Councils across the country are holding a summit so that they hear directly from the public about what help can be provided to those in need. I've never known such anxiety and despair in the past 50 years from so many people about what the winter months could be like, with more and more households struggling to make ends meet.
We are asking Norfolk County Council to set one up immediately. There is no time to lose. No stone should be left unturned, nor any suggestion ignored. The County Council does not have all the answers and cannot afford to come up with anything less than the best solution it can find for all of Norfolk’s residents.
The thought of people dying this winter due to a lack of heating fills me with horror. I want the council that I am a part of to do all that it can to stop this.”
