Responding to today’s fiscal statement, Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for North Norfolk, Steffan Aquarone, said:
“The Conservatives’ catastrophic mismanagement of the economy has created a huge black hole in public finances, and now they’ve come cap in hand to the British people demanding we make even more sacrifices to fix their mess. It would be laughable if the consequences weren’t so catastrophic!
“Today’s budget is just another example of the Conservative government taking the residents of North Norfolk for granted. It's this government who crashed the economy, but they're expecting us to roll over while they give tax cuts to banks at the expense of our already struggling schools and hospitals."
“We all know that these supposed increases in household support will be wiped out by skyrocketing inflation, which the government has failed to get under control. Public services will continue to get cut to the bone and councils will be forced to tighten their belts further, putting vital projects on the backburner. I’m very worried about how cuts to these services will impact our communities.
“Let’s remember, this is all a political choice. It doesn’t have to be this way.
“Liberal Democrats would have taken the steps which seem obvious to many, like imposing a proper windfall tax, with real teeth, to claw back the unfair profits of oil and gas giants. We would also have stopped giving tax cuts to banks, which could see them rake in £18 billion more in the next five years.
"Today’s budget speech is a desperate attempt to cover up the fact that Conservative policy caused this recession.
“Fiddling around the edges isn't going to change that -- as the Office for Budget Responsibility forecasts show. It's too late. The damage is done. We need a complete change of who is in charge, so we can work towards a long-term vision for our society based on fairness, and taking away the barriers that prevent people from leading fulfilled, productive lives."
