Responsible and Responsive Budget under NNDC Liberal Democrats

Liberal Democrat budget proposals for North Norfolk District Council were agreed at the end of February.

The budget means a small increase in the Council Tax charge for 2019-2020 of £4.95 for a Band D property, less than the cost of a couple of coffees. This is a tiny sum compared to the huge increase in tax levied by the Tory controlled county council and police service.

Liberal Democrats intend to ensure that NNDC becomes far more financially astute. Our budget sets out a clear direction of travel that will enable us to:

  • Set up a new property company with an initial investment of £2 million to address local housing needs by building homes specifically for local people, whilst also generating a future revenue stream to support the building of more affordable homes on an ongoing basis.
  • Support initiatives to improve transport for people to work, attend school and access leisure facilities by allocating £33000 to the Community Transfer Fund
  • Support budding entrepreneurs across the District, and create a new business start-up hub to support those who want to work here.
  • Benefit the maximum number of residents across the District e.g. by allocating £30000 to fund the opening of public conveniences throughout the year, funding the Sports Development Team for a further year, supporting Cromer Museum working with NCC to improve roads.
  • Start to address the yawning gaps that have been allowed to develop within the Council’s future strategy.

It is important to note that:

  • The budget has been judged to be financially sound by Council finance officers.
  • Each element has been subject to review and appraisal and has found to be a sound investment or project for the Council to invest in, for the benefit of all our residents.
  • Four months ago Liberal Democrats inherited a Council with an annual future year’s deficit of approximately two million pounds, and no strategic plan in place to address it. We have begun to tackle this challenge.
  • The Tories, while in control of the Council and after years of storing up funds began spending on every project that came their way in a desperate attempt to disguise the real situation, or to garner favour at election time. Liberal Democrats will invest these funds for the benefit of the whole community.
  • Support budding entrepreneurs across the District, and create a new business start-up hub to support those who want to work here.
  • Benefit the maximum number of residents across the District, to show that Liberal Democrats are not a party that taxes and spends.
  • Start to address the yawning gaps that have been allowed to develop within the Council’s future strategy.

Our responsible approach to budgeting takes account of potential deficits and seeks to limit the damage caused by decisions of the Tory Government and County Council. The small rise in Council Tax helps tackle the potential deficit NNDC is facing in future years. Liberal Democrats cannot ignore reality nor try and gain political favour by taking the easy way out.
